Michael Poynor<\/h3>\n

Michael was born in the Falkland Islands and educated in Argentina and England, and trained for theatre at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (L.A.M.D.A.), London.<\/span><\/p>\n

He has been Artistic Director for the LYRIC THEATRE, Belfast; HARROGATE THEATRE, Yorkshire; STAGE ’80 THEATRE COMPANY, Belfast; ULSTER YOUTH THEATRE; THE NATIONAL YOUTH THEATRE OF WALES: and, currently the ULSTER THEATRE COMPANY.<\/span><\/p>\n

He was Chief Executive of the MILLENNIUM FORUM in Derry and Head of Culture and Arts at QUEEN\u2019S UNIVERSITY, Belfast.<\/span><\/p>\n

He is an award winning Director and Lighting Designer having directed over 150 productions, Designed Sets for 120 and Lighting for over 250, as well as Fight Directing for nearly 100 productions.<\/span><\/p>\n

He has written a string of burlesque pantomimes including\u00a0Scrooge\u2019s Christmas<\/em>;\u00a0Alice!<\/em>\u00a0(a musical adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s most famous books); a new version of Gilbert and Sullivan\u2019s best known operetta:\u00a0Rockin\u2019 Mikado<\/em>\u00a0which was nominated \u2018Best Visiting Production\u2019 in the 1998 Manchester Theatre Awards;\u00a0Comedy of Errors: The Musical<\/em>\u00a0(2013) and\u00a0Jonathan Harker and Dracula<\/em>\u00a0(2014).<\/span><\/p>\n

Amongst the productions he has directed are: The UK provincial premieres of\u00a0Jesus Christ Superstar, Grease, Hello Dolly<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Once a Catholic<\/em>\u00a0at the LYRIC THEATRE, Belfast;\u00a0Interview<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Bald Prima Donna<\/em>\u00a0at the ASHCROFT THEATRE, Croydon;\u00a0Indians, Schweyk in the Second World War, What the Butler Saw<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Noises Off<\/em>\u00a0at the LYRIC THEATRE, Belfast;\u00a0The Glass Menagerie, Relatively Speaking<\/em>\u00a0and The Happiest of the Three at the OVERGROUND THEATRE, Kingston-upon-Thames;\u00a0Alphabetical Order, Equus, Joseph and the Amazing<\/em>\u2026 and\u00a0Candida<\/em>\u00a0at HARROGATE THEATRE;\u00a0The Snoopy Show, Hello and Goodbye, Ashes, Kelly’s Book<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Crack-Up<\/em>\u00a0for STAGE ’80,\u00a0How the Other Half Loves, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie<\/em>\u00a0for THEATRE ULSTER;\u00a0Can’t Pay? Won’t Pay!, The Mating Season, The Boyfriend<\/em>, and\u00a0Leave Him to Heaven<\/em>\u00a0for the ARTS THEATRE, Belfast;\u00a0Oh, What A Lovely War<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The War of the Worlds<\/em>\u00a0for the ULSTER YOUTH THEATRE,\u00a0La Belle Helene<\/em>\u00a0for CASTLE WARD OPERA CO. and\u00a0West Side Story<\/em>\u00a0with the Ulster Orchestra at the Klondike in Belfast for OPERA NORTHERN IRELAND.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the ULSTER THEATRE COMPANY he directed\u00a0Murder in the Cathedral<\/em>\u00a0(1998) (Sell out production for Belfast Festival at Queen\u2019s at St Anne\u2019s Cathedral, Belfast);\u00a0West Side Story, A Chorus Line, Oklahoma<\/em>\u00a0and the RSC\u2019s version of\u00a0The Wizard of Oz<\/em>, all of which toured the UK and Ireland. In 2019 he directed and designed the world premiere of Hennessy Award winner, Sam Burnside’s\u00a0The Long Now<\/em>\u00a0for the Seamus Heaney Home Place Theatre.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2009 he directed and choreographed the \u2018on pitch\u2019 celebrations at the 80,000 seat Croke Park Stadium, Dublin, for the GAA 125th anniversary celebrations.<\/span><\/p>\n
